Is 400Hz too low on GPA 390 driver?

I?m trying to decide on a two inch driver.

I have a large bass horn being built (with GPA 416 drivers)?which will run up to around 500Hz.

Is it better to use the GPA 390 driver, as this will operate lower, eg 400/500Hz and up?or is it better to use the 399 driver from 500/600Hz and up? (I?m using a tweeter horn from around 6,000Hz?so the top end is taken care of.)

In other words, do you have a preference for either driver, given I?m running them quite low in the range.

I'd go for the 290...but that's just an opinion, Have never owned any.

I'm using the 399 on an Elliptrac horn with a Klipsch bottom end & a JBL 2404 tweeter.
I'm crossing passively at 400 HZ (12db/octave) & 6000Hz. They handle this with ease.

I am however building a set of AP12-500's with you beaut coils & caps just for the heck of it.

You won't have any problems at 400 Hz for home use.....now PA use would be a different story.

PS. Neither the 390 or the 399 are 2" drivers, they are both 1.4 inch drivers.

My concern would be the lower mass of the 390 compared to the old 290. Were I to go to 400, I would go for the large alnico or ceramic 290's. My feeling is a 30 pound driver will resonate less.

For bass, I'm quite excited to be building the half orello bass 'horn' from bert Doppenberg, using 4 416's.

I've build one frame, and will finish others on weekend...then add layers of 4pm mdf before final layer of veneered ply.
Tweeter is visaton horn.

That bass section should be just awesome.

Yes, I built the Elliptracs from Daves kit.......not an easy job, but worth the effort. Here's some pics.
I'll be using some of the components from the original ALK uni to build the AP12-6000, otherwise you could have had these.
